This pattern almost needs no introduction. McCalls 6844 has 84 reviews on PatternReview.com! Both MimiG and Crafty Gemini have done tutorials on it. Needles and Fashion even modified it to a coat dress. I loved this pattern so much I made it twice before I could even get this post up! I almost didn’t even post this because it is completely unnecessary. However this blog is really for me so I’m sharing.

M6844 in Black ponte from fabric mart
and in B&W Polka Dot ponte from Hancock

I completed the solid black version first as I had some black ponte in my stash because who couldn’t use another black cardigan. I followed Mimi G’s construction order that allowed me to sew the sleeves in flat. The only change I made was adding some clear elastic to the shoulder seams for stability, though I don’t think this ponte needed it.

I had drooled over this black and white polka dot ponte at Hancock Fabrics but wasn’t sure what I’d do with it. And at $19.99 regular price  and only 52″ wide I couldn’t buy it with out a project in mind. So after the black version came out so nicely I knew I wanted to make another one with the polka dot ponte. While I was at it I made a pencil skirt too! The review on that will come later this week.

  5. […] McCalls 6844 was a TNT of everyone I met in the sewing community when I began sewing in 2014. It won a best pattern award from Pattern Review in 2012. I think *literally* everyone made a version of this cardigan. Some even used woven fabric though it was drafted for knits with success (they had to size up of course). I never thought McCalls would retire it (much like M6886), but is currently OOP. Though it had no closure you could easily belt it with a RTW belt as I did above or by sewing a matching or contrast tie belt. The peplum added some interest to a otherwise simple cardigan. I could still see myself making another one even though I already have two (the one above plus a black one). It is a great cardigan to dress up a simple outfit. […]

  6. […] Who doesn’t love M6844! This pattern has been extremely popular for years. It has 186 pattern reviews!  Sadly it is now OOP, but I’m sure you can find a copy of it online if you don’t have it. The shawl and variety of peplum options made this style a top seller. Being a great intro to sewing with knits pattern didn’t hurt either. I’ve made two of these and while the polka dot one above is my favorite the solid black one gets more wear. See my full review here. […]
