Here is another review on a tutorial by my favorite sewista Mimi G! I love just about everything this women does so when she had a sale on her tutorials I picked up one of her latest tuts – The Leather Baddie Skirt. This was the answer to the question “What am I going to do with this fabric?”. A few weeks prior while searching Hancockfabrics.com for black faux leather fabric when I saw both the copper and bronze was on their Spot the Bolt sale for just $2.97. I had to have it even though I had no idea what I would use it for. I purchased 2 yards of each but it turns out I should’ve bought more as I’ve already used a bit of both and still have more project ideas.
Getting back to the skirt itself. As usual you can not go wrong with a Mimi G tutorial as she drafts and sews along with you explaining every step. I was able to finish this skirt in around 5-6 hours from drafting to hemming. I only (sort of) know because I started it the afternoon of the day I planned to wear it. I received some compliments that night! Keep Reading for my full review.
Pattern Description: Faux leather front skirt with tuxedo tail crossover back
Sizing: self drafted from your own measurements following the included sew along video
Difficulty: 2/ Only because you have the additional step of drafting the pattern.
Does it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope? Yes
Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes. I love that Mimi provides a video for her tutorials. This makes drafting the pattern and sewing the garment simple.
Likes: I like the back cross over detail!
Dislikes: I’m still a little unsure about the ‘tails’ but I didn’t know how else to finish the back
Pattern alterations or any design changes made: Only that I used fusible hem tape to hem instead of the recommendation
Would I sew it again? I might try to add a bodice and make it as a dress.
Would I recommend it to others? Yes!
Conclusion: Cute skirt that is an easy sew and should fit almost perfectly since it’s based off your measurements.
