Twist Front Little Black Dress
Well it should be no surprise that this is yet another Mimi G inspired piece since you should know by now - I love her. Anyway I made this a while ago right after she posted her free Little Black Dress tutorial back in April. Mimi used Burda 7065 but I used So Sew Easy’s Twist Front T-Shirt pattern I had already downloaded.Although in the video tutorial Mimi alters Burda 7065 from a swing dress to a fitted midi I used the same instructions to alter So Sew Easy’s twist top pattern from a shirt to a fitted midi. I prefer So Sew Easy's pattern because it lacks a front seam. Also, Deby at So Sew Easy provided great instructions for alternations to accommodate varied bust sizes, even a tie strap option. I loved the way it turned out, I think the hubby did too.Pattern: So Sew Easy Twist Front T-shirt Pattern Description: It’s a sexy halter top that can also be a dress if you’d like to extend it. Designed for knit fabrics, this top crosses over at the front and the little keyhole at the front gives an interesting look while still actually being modest with full high coverage.Pattern Sizing: Small, Medium, Large (I used Medium)Difficulty: 2/BeginnerFabric Used: Black spandex knit from a local storeDid it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes. Well the top part did. Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes. They were fairly straightforward. I did get hung up on one part of the bodice construction, but that was really just me not being able to visualize what was happening. Once I just followed the steps it all worked out. What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I thought it made a great LBD and I loved that it came together quickly.Pattern alterations or any design changes you made: The only thing I did differently, other than make it a dress, was to add some ½” elastic to the top of the upper back piece. I simply stitched a narrow zigzag stitch about 5/8” from the fold (top) on the back piece to create a casing for the elastic, threaded it through and attached each end of the elastic to the side of the fabric piece. I don’t think this would have been necessary if I had cut the small instead of the medium. I just wanted to make sure the back stayed up and I think I underestimated the stretchiness of my fabric. Next time I will cut a small but add ½” or so to the strap length so it’s still comfy.Would you sew it again? Possibly, in another color or print. I might even try a fuller dress.Would you recommend it to others? YesConclusion: I think it turned out great!Total cost: $7.49Spandex fabric $4.99 x 1.5yd = 7.49Elastic: scrap = 0.00
