Denim Dress - McCalls 6954

I love, Love, LOVE this dress. This is one of my favorite things I've sewn so far (for now). Several years ago my cousin had a similar dress from Gap that I loved. I searched high and low for that dress at my local Gap stores with no luck. Her dress was a darker denim and wasn't high low, but the overall aesthetic was the same. This is why I am absolutely in love with sewing. If I can dream something up I can almost always find or modify a pattern to bring my inspiration to a reality. The extra plus is that I can usually make it for less than what I would pay in store. Even better, I can have it in whatever color, print or material I like. Though I've owned this pattern since last year I believe I purchased it with the plan to replicate her dress. This lightweight denim (possibly a chambray) was a lucky find at my local discount fabric store. I scored this over 3 yd remnant for just $2. I originally wanted a darker wash denim, but some times being frougie also means being flexible.Since I had enough yardage I chose to cut this pattern on the bias, View A, because I felt it would drape better as the fabric is a tad stiff. It falls just like I wanted. If I use a lighter fabric like a knit or a challis I may not cut it on the bias. I would have preferred to use store bought bias tape than make my own, but maybe if I would just go ahead and buy a bias tape maker it would have made the process easier. Basically I need to be more patient because by the time I got to the facing I just wanted to wear my dress. Anyway the instructions were very straight forward and the construction was simple.Although I do always despise hemming curved hems.I just can't say how pleased I am with the result!! I'm thinking of making another in a darker denim chambray using a gold thread for top stitching. I also think it would be great in a rayon challis or linen. I think i will ditch the hi-lo on the next one and instead do a curved front and back hem at the knee.Pattern Description:  Pullover dresses (fitted through bust) have bias neck and armhole facings, shaped hemline, wrong side shows, and narrow hem.
