B&W Link Wrap Dress: McCalls 6884
Did you know I blog monthly over on Fabric Mart Fabricista blog? I do! You can read new posts from me every fourth Saturday. For July I compared four faux wrap dresses (well three wraps and one wrap bodice) for a Wrap Battle. If you've been following me at a decent length of time you know that I love dresses, especially knit dresses and a wrap detail is a bonus! As you can see in my vision sketches from my Summer 2018 To-Sew List post I choose McCalls 6884, Burda 6829, New Look 6301 and McCalls 7504 (I swapped this for Kwik Sew 4081). All are faux wrap dress...well NL6301 is really just a wrap bodice dress, but they all have a wrap detail.First up was McCalls 6884 which I sewed up in this black-and-white geometric interlock ITY (sold out but here it is in red). I've sewn this pattern twice before (here and here) and my only complaint was the position of the side ties were high - think empire waist - so I lowered them about two inches.I do have to pin the neckline to prevent any wardrobe malfunctions up top (I'm sure some pattern tweaking could solve this issue) but I do love that a faux wrap dress almost ensures you won't have an accidental Marilyn Monroe moment if a gust of wind comes along.ITY knits get a bad wrap by some, but I love to wear and sew ITY knit. The drape is great for flowy looks like dresses, skirts or wide leg pants. They typically have have nice stretch and recovery which is great for comfy lounge pieces. ITY garments are also perfect for travel wear because they are not prone to wrinkle. Some may find this lighter knit a bit trickier to work with than a double knit, but I rarely have issues.Overall the dress is a quick sew with just three pattern pieces, though there is a decent about of narrow hemming due to the lack of band for the neck and armholes. I would prefer a banded finish, but these are the moments I love my coverstitch machine! This dress is not my favorite out of the four mainly because it's very simple. Which is actually a plus when using a bold or large print, but just wasn't enough to make me choose it over a couple of the others.
To see which one is head over to my Fabricista Post or make sure you follow my blog as I'll be posting about the other three very soon.
