Sunny Summer Separates: Simplicity 9550
Overview:
I you read the previous post, here, you know that I purchased 2yds of each of these polka dot fabrics. Well in another visit to Melanated Fabrics I saw a 1.5 yd remnant of the white dots on yellow fabric and grabbed it. This allowed me to add a another piece to this collection of separates. So I added these shorts.
Pattern:
I've already made this top twice and the shorts once so you already know I like this set. Both pieces come together easily and quickly.
Fabric:
This yellow and white polka dot viscose is from Melanated Fabrics. There's also orange and green available. It feels great and drapes beautifully.
Modifications:
I added 2" to the hem of the top for a bit more coverage and to make sure the girls have room. Additionally I omitted the elastic hem.
For the shorts I added about an inch to the back crotch seam. The first pair, here, can be a bit wedgie prone, so I needed to add a bit of ease to these. I also saw no reason not to have pockets so I added those using a pocket pattern piece from S9597, though any inseam pocket would work. You could even draft your own (just make sure the pocket isn't diet than your shorts are long).
Summary:
I think I'm going to retire this pattern for this summer. Though I could use more shorts. I'm sure they'll return next year.
Pattern: Mimi G for Simplicity 9550
Pattern Description: Pull-over top has puffed dolman sleeves finished with elastic at hems and back button closure. View B top features short cuffed sleeves, elastic at hem and open back with self ties. Mid-calf skirt and mid-thigh shorts have back zipper, hip yoke and sash.
Sizing: I sewed a 20 top and 22 bottom. 4-12, 14-22 (9550) 18W-26W, 26W-34W (9551)
