Black & White Mod Skirt Set - Know Me 2013

If you watched my Spring Haul video you know I started to pass on this pattern, know Me 2013, but I’m so happy I made it. It’s a cute set and I can see myself making it again.

Overview:

Skill Level: ★★

Sewing Time: 2 hrs per piece

Pattern Rating: ★★★★★

Pattern:

Brittany J Jones designed this cute skirt set pattern for Know Me Patterns. The crop top features scoop or square neckline as well the option for a tank or short sleeves. There are also options for the faux wrap skirt, choose knee or midi length.

The top came together quickly. I sewed a size 18 , my bust is 44” for reference and the fit was fine so I’d say it runs a bit large. The top is fully lined so I read through the directions which were pretty clear. I actually planned to mix the views by sewing the square neck with short sleeves, but because I followed the directions for view A I left off the sleeves.

For the skirt I omitted the buttons because I wanted a clean mod look. Thankfully these are not functional (well the bottoms ones are but they don’t need to be) because I do NOT love sewing buttonholes on knit fabric anyway. I also sewed the front facing down a bit lower than called for to eliminate the slit. I may add buttons to another version but I still won’t sew the buttonholes.

Don’t forget if you have any issues you can watch the sewalong videos by Brittany herself.

Fabric:

I went back and forth about solid versus colorblocking this set. A navy set is what made it to my vision board, but this black and white ponte is what made it to my cutting table. I love black and white - colorblocked, animal prints, stripes, houndstooth, polka dots, you name it! I did debate on where to place the colors as I typically shy away from white bottoms, but that’s what won.

My orginial plans and the colorblocking I considered.

I tend to keep black ponte in my stash, I grab it whenever I see a good buy because I can always use it so I have no idea where it’s from. I also think the white ponte was a remnant from McCalls 7099 that I made way back in 2015.

Modifications:

I eliminated the buttonholes on the skirt and sewed the facing down almost completely, eliminating the slit. I didn’t make an y to the top

Lessons Learned:

  • This pattern seems to run large. My measurements are 44”B, 40” W, 48” H and I sewed a size 18 in both the top and bottom.

  • The top is fully lined.

  • The button and buttonholes are largely non-functioning

  • The skirt was a bit long on me. I’m 5’5”. I would likely shorten in the future to hit a bit above the knee.
