What comes first the pattern or the fabric? It depends is my answer. This time fabric spoke to me. The tropical print screamed a skirt set, so that’s what I made.
Pattern:
I only had 3 yards of fabric and I new I wanted a wrap skirt. My go to wrap skirt seems to be McCalls 8259, which I’ve made before here, and it takes 1-3/4 yds. That left me with 1-1/4 yds for a top so a cami or tank were my only options. Since I had just whipped up the camisole from Mimi G’s book, here, I decided to make another.
As I discussed the first time, sewing up the camisole is a quick process. This time I did opt for tie straps, which are fun, next time I’ll try adjustable. I wanted the stripes to be vertical to contrast against the skirt so I cut the pieces on the crossgrain fold instead of on the bias. Lastly I did shorten the length by about 2 inches.
This wrap skirt is also a quick sew as it has no closure. I love a wrap skirt because they can grow and shrink with you. Here I went with the grain because I liked the horizontal stripe, even though that meant do a little extra work trying to line up the stripes and the side seams.
Fabric:
This fabric was a Walmart remnant find, I paid just $8 for 3 yards. I’m not sure what it is, synthetic for sure. I love the fact that its doesn’t wrinkle yet has the look of a linen.
When I purchased it I thought the stripes were vertical, but they were horizontal. I decided to play with the stripes by making the skirt on the grain and the top on the cross grain.
Modifications:
McCalls 8259
squared off the rounded from edge
Mimi G Camisole
shorted the hem by 2 inches
cut 4 straps to make tie straps
cut on the crossgrain instead of the bias
