Black and White Striped wrap bodice dress - Butterick 5950
Ever since I sewed up my leopard print version of this dress I knew I would sew it again and again. This is a pattern I desperately searched for as it was OOP by the time I "discovered" it. Thankfully one of my amazing sewsistas had this pattern in her stash and gifted me with it. I was so thrilled when I truly ended up loving this pattern as much as I thought I would. This go around I decided to go for a sleeveless version of View C. I was inspired by none other than Mimi G to make this copycat B&W Striped version. I went for sleeveless because it's hot here in the south and I really hate sleeves in the summer. I lined the bodice whole dress for two reasons. One, my ITY was a little thin and I was concerned about it being see thru. And two I find it gives the whole dress a clean look. I could almost wear this dress inside out, well if I hadn't used mitch-matched afraid for the lining. I was lazy and didn't hand stitch the lining bodice to the skirt but other than the seam at the waistline there are no visible seams from the inside. The only thing I was disappointed about was I could not for the life of me get the stripes to line up properly. My excuse is that this ITY was rather slippery and no matter how many pins I used I could get the fabric to stop shifting. I wish I had omitted the back seam since I knew I wasn't going to install the zipper. Sadly while I was cutting my fabric I was following the pattern piece instructions rather than my notes on this pattern. In the end it's not TERRIBLE and I will still wear it (I already have) but I will think of it each time I wear it.Pattern: Butterick 5950 (OOP) View C minus sleevesPattern Description: Close-fitting dress has neckline and pleat variations, elasticized (seamed) waist, and invisible back zipper. YesWere the instructions easy to follow? Yes, they were straightforward.Likes: wrapped bodice, pleated skirtDislikes: NonePattern alterations or any design changes made: I omitted the zipper because I used a stretchy ITY knit. Next time I will likely add an inch to the bodice and subtract an inch from the skirt to lower the waist. I also added a lining to the bodice and skirt because I was concerned my ITY was thin.Would I sew it again? Definitely. I still want to try View A.Would I recommend it to others? Yes although this pattern is out-of-printConclusion: Very easy and quick dress to sew up (especially if your fabric is stretchy enough to omit the zipper)Total Cost: $7.431.5 yds B&W striped ITY @ 4.95/yd = $7.43
