Burgundy Velvet Drape Top: New Look 6303

Some patterns are so good you have to make them again and again. Patterns like McCall 6886 (see several versions here), New Look 6230 (here and here), and Vogue 9116 (here and here) .New Look 6303 is also on this list. I first sewed up View D of this top back it in the spring (see here). Right after I made it I knew I'd be making more. I've worn my first version several times and every time I think "I've got to make another one". I bought a pair of velvet over-the-knee boots early last year at the very end of winter that I hadn't worn. Partially because spring was right around the corner, but also because I couldn't decide what to where them with. Turns out the shaft was a tad too large for my bare legs, which ruined my plans to wear them with a cute little mini dress. They worked better over jeans or leggings and so I decided I needed a cute top to pair them with.Thankfully, the velvet trend is still this winter so I made a visit to my trusty local store, Fine Fabrics, to find some matching velvet. Sadly though they had a whole row of velvet none of the bolts were quite the right shade. I ended up purchasing some hoping that since the top and the boots wouldn't touch they'd look close enough once I styled them. WRONG!It doesn't matter though I still love this top AND I ended up wearing my boots with an all black ensemble. The top was just as easy to sew as last time although I made a huge mistake. Somehow I managed not to buy enough fabric, so in a effort to "Make it work!" I flipped the sleeve against the nap without thinking. Thankfully you can't really tell by looking at it, but I can definitely tell when I'm touching it.I also wish I had made the sleeves longer to hit my wrist instead of the three-quarter length. I'm also liking the idea of bell sleeves.  Those will likely be future version because like I said a the start this is now a tried and true pattern.Still I love the drape-y twist front with the keyhole and the shirttail hem. This top looks great in lighter fabrics (like challis or silk) because it highlights the drape feature more, but even in this thicker (though still lightweight) velvet it looks great.
