The Mermaid Maxi* has two views: a straight maxi with a side slit (that can be omitted) and a flared skirt. Both call for knit fabric (you can use any knit from ITY to brushed poly to ponte or even scuba!), feature an elastic waist and offer either gathered or straight side pocket (who doesn't love pockets?)
I really like the drama of the flared skirt so that is the view I whipped up and I really mean whipped up. I believe I finished this skirt in under two hours. With just 4 pieces (5 if you include the pocket) and no zipper or button closer thanks to the fold over elastic waist this project could easily be completed in a day even for a beginner!
I selected a size 16 based on my hip measurements in comparison with the size chart. Turns out it was a little large (that may be due to my knit choice) and I ended up taking in about 3/4" at each side seam. Due to the six seams adjustments are easy to make whether they be in the waist or hips. I do wish I'd added an inch or two to the length as I didn't have any to spare and opted not to hem my skirt. Overall I highly recommend this skirt pattern! I love it and already have plans to sew the straight view with the slit.
