Sweatshirt with a Twist: Kommatia Iris
About a month ago I tested two new patterns for Kommatia Patterns and this sweatshirt is the first to be released. The Iris sweatshirt features a twist front detail, ribbed back band, a banded drop sleeves and offers both a cropped and waist length view.
My intent was to sew up the longer option (view B), but somehow in my haste to whip this up I cut the cropped front view. I actually didn't realized this until it was time to sew the side seams and I realized my back piece was a good bit longer than the front. UGH! Unfortunately I didn't have enough of this funky knit, that I grabbed at a fabric swap, to recut the front pieces. This meant I had to remove the back band and shorten the back piece to the cropped length. Even with my mistake this was a quick sew.
Kommatia's pattern instructions are typically very brief but still clear and this time was no exception. The XL in the longer view only takes 1 -1/2 yards of fabric (plus some ribbing for the bands) so it's great for stash busting. You could even get creative and color block the front and sleeves to make use of some smaller pieces in your stash.
My only complaint was the neck hole is on the smaller side Though it wasn't difficult to put on, it is a higher and tighter than I like. Also as a FYI I cut and sewed the XL but I added about 1/2" to the side seams of the front and back bodice, sleeve band and inside sleeve because I am at the top of their sizing. Their sizing is for XL is a 41" bust and a 34" waist while I'm closer to 42" and 36".
It's starting to get warm here in the southern US but I could see this in a lighter sweater knit for cool spring evenings. The pattern calls for sweatshirt fleece, ponte or french terry, so keep in mind that a sweater knit would have more drape.
