The inspiration for this set came from a pair of pants from H&M. I originally only planned to make the pants, but thankfully I had enough fabric to make a matching top as well. I love playing with stripes so this was fun.

Pattern:

I wanted the Malibu Shirt as soon as Lindsey shared it on IG, I’m not sure she even said it was a pattern at the time. I love the twist detail along with the oversized pockets. Its a elevated style but so comfy to wear.

Simplicity 9756 is probably my favorite pattern for pull on woven pants. The rise is high, the legs are wide and it has inseam pockets. I just knew I would love the two together. This summer is all about crop tops and high rise pull on pants for me.

First up the Malibu top - it may look tricky due to the twist front, but guess what? It’s just an illusion. The front piece is actually cut on the fold and the band wraps around the bottom of the top. Now this does change up the construction of the top a little, but it definitely works.

The instructions are clear, but if sewing on a placket is new to you it may take some time and some deep breaths to get through. The only issue I had were the faux cuffs. I just wasn’t getting what the instructions were saying. I’ve sewn several faux cuffs though so I just winged it.

The pants are very simple with very little fitting necessary. I did eliminate the drawstring this time since I was going for a cleaner look. So I just had two rows of elastic and left the middle casing empty. So far I’ve only made this pattern in black and white - stripes here and zebra previously. I’ve got to add some colors.

Fabric:

This black and white vertical striped fabric is a 100% rayon poplin from Melanated Fabrics. I grabbed it during their closing sale (see here for the whole haul) back in April. I love a stripe so I had to grab it. When I started this pattern I realized the fabric was more sheer that I thought. So I was really happy the pockets on the top provide a bit more coverage in the chest area. Also this was pretty slippery so while I did cut the pattern pieces on the fold I spent a good amount of time trying to keep things lined up.

Whenever I’m sewing stripes I like to play a bit with the directions of the stripes, so I cut the pockets and flaps on the crossgrain for some contrast. I did the same for the collar and collar stand. I debated on the direction of the stripes for the placket but decided that horizontal would be to busy.
